Account & Login
How do I open a Cathay Bank account?
Opening an account takes under 10 minutes. Download the Cathay Bank app or visit our website, click "Open Account," and follow the guided steps. You\'ll need a valid government-issued ID (driver\'s license or passport), proof of address (utility bill or lease agreement dated within 60 days), and your Social Security Number or Tax ID. No minimum deposit is required for checking or savings accounts. For business accounts, you\'ll also need your EIN and business formation documents. Once submitted, most applications are approved instantly; if additional review is needed, we\'ll contact you within one business day.
I forgot my password. How do I reset it?
On the login screen, click "Forgot Password." Enter your registered email address, and we\'ll send you a secure reset link valid for 30 minutes. For security, you may be asked to verify your identity via SMS code sent to your registered phone number, or answer your security questions. If you no longer have access to your registered email or phone number, call us at +1 800 555 1234 and speak with a representative who can verify your identity using your account number, Social Security Number, and recent transaction history. For your protection, password resets initiated from a new device may require additional verification.
How do I close my account?
You can close your account directly from the app under Settings > Account Management > Close Account. Before closing, ensure all pending transactions have cleared (this typically takes 3-5 business days) and your balance is zero. If you have a remaining balance, you can transfer it to an external account or request a cashier\'s check mailed to your address on file. For joint accounts or business accounts, all authorized signers must confirm the closure electronically or in writing. Please note: closing your account will permanently delete your transaction history from online banking after 90 days, though we retain records for regulatory purposes for 7 years. If you have any automatic payments or direct deposits set up, remember to update those with your new bank information before closing.
Security
Is my money safe with Cathay Bank?
Absolutely. Cathay Bank is FDIC insured up to $250,000 per depositor, per account ownership category. We use 256-bit AES encryption for all data transmission and storage, the same standard used by the U.S. government for classified information. Our platform features biometric authentication (Face ID, Touch ID, fingerprint), real-time fraud monitoring that analyzes every transaction for suspicious patterns, and automatic session timeouts after 10 minutes of inactivity. We undergo annual SOC 2 Type II audits and quarterly penetration testing by independent security firms. Additionally, we offer zero-liability protection for unauthorized transactions — if you report fraud within 60 days of your statement date, you are not responsible for any unauthorized charges. For EU customers, deposits are protected under the European Deposit Insurance Scheme (EDIS) up to €100,000.
What should I do if I suspect fraud?
Immediately lock your card in the app by going to Cards > Select Card > Lock Card. This prevents any new transactions while preserving your recurring payments. Then call our 24/7 Security Hotline at +1 800 555 9999. A fraud specialist will review your recent transactions with you, identify any unauthorized charges, and issue a replacement card with expedited shipping (usually arrives within 1-2 business days). We\'ll file a fraud report on your behalf and, in most cases, provisionally credit your account for disputed amounts within 1 business day while we investigate. The investigation typically takes 5-10 business days. You\'ll receive email updates at each stage. If fraud is confirmed, the provisional credit becomes permanent. We also recommend changing your online banking password and reviewing your credit report for any unauthorized accounts opened in your name.
How does two-factor authentication work?
Two-factor authentication (2FA) adds a critical second layer of security beyond your password. After entering your username and password, you\'ll be prompted for a second verification method. You can choose from: (1) SMS code sent to your registered mobile number, (2) Email code sent to your registered email address, (3) Authenticator app code (we support Google Authenticator, Authy, and Microsoft Authenticator), or (4) Biometric verification using Face ID or fingerprint on supported devices. We strongly recommend using an authenticator app rather than SMS, as it provides stronger protection against SIM swapping attacks. You can manage your 2FA preferences under Settings > Security > Two-Factor Authentication. If you lose access to your 2FA method, contact customer support at +1 800 555 1234 — after identity verification, we can help you regain access and set up a new 2FA method.
Transfers & Payments
How long do transfers take?
Transfer times vary by type and destination. Cathay-to-Cathay transfers between your own accounts are instant, 24/7, including weekends and holidays. Domestic ACH transfers to external banks typically clear within 1-2 business days, though many arrive by the next business day if initiated before 3:00 PM EST. Domestic wire transfers sent before 3:00 PM EST on business days usually arrive the same day; wires sent after the cutoff or on weekends/holidays are processed the next business day. International wire transfers (SWIFT) generally take 1-5 business days depending on the destination country, currency, and any intermediary banks involved. Transfers to countries in the European Union via SEPA typically clear within 1 business day. Please note that the first transfer to a new external account may be delayed by 1-2 business days for security verification. You can track the status of any transfer in real-time through the app under Transfers > History.
What are the transfer limits?
Standard daily transfer limits for personal accounts are: $10,000 for ACH transfers to external banks, $25,000 for domestic wire transfers, $5,000 for mobile check deposits, and $2,500 for peer-to-peer (P2P) payments. Monthly limits are $50,000 for ACH and $100,000 for wires. You can request higher limits by upgrading to Cathay Premium (limits increase to $50,000 ACH daily and $100,000 wire daily) or by contacting customer support with a valid reason — our team will review your account history and may approve temporary or permanent limit increases. Business accounts have higher default limits: $50,000 ACH daily, $250,000 wire daily, and $25,000 mobile deposit daily, with monthly caps of $250,000 and $500,000 respectively. All limits reset at midnight EST. For your security, transfers exceeding $10,000 may trigger a brief review by our fraud team, which typically takes under 30 minutes during business hours.
Cards
How do I activate my new card?
You have three ways to activate your new Cathay Bank card. The fastest method is through our mobile app: open the app, go to Cards > Select Your New Card > Activate. You\'ll need to verify your identity and create a 4-digit PIN. Your card is ready to use immediately. Alternatively, you can activate online by logging into Cathay-bank.com, navigating to Card Management, and following the activation prompts. If you prefer phone activation, call the toll-free number printed on the sticker attached to your new card (1-800-555-0190) and follow the automated prompts — have your card number and last 4 digits of your Social Security Number ready. For security, your new card cannot be used for online or international transactions until activated. If you don\'t activate your card within 60 days of receipt, it will be automatically deactivated and you\'ll need to request a replacement.
What are the cash back rewards?
The Cathay Platinum Card offers a tiered cash back structure designed to maximize your everyday spending: 3% cash back on dining and travel (restaurants, cafes, hotels, airlines, rideshares), 2% on groceries and gas stations, and 1% on all other eligible purchases. Cash back is calculated on the net purchase amount (after returns and credits) and is automatically credited to your account as a statement credit at the end of each billing cycle — no action required on your part. There is no annual cap on rewards earned, no minimum redemption threshold, and rewards never expire as long as your account remains open and in good standing. For business cardholders, the Cathay Business Platinum offers up to 5% on office supplies and telecom, 3% on advertising, and 2% on shipping. You can view your current rewards balance, spending breakdown by category, and projected annual earnings anytime in the app under Cards > Rewards. If you prefer, you can also opt to redeem rewards as a direct deposit to your Cathay checking account instead of a statement credit.
